Men's Lax Falls 20-5 to Washington and Lee

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team endured a strong first quarter by Washington and Lee University, ultimately falling to the Generals 20-5 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Friday.

Washington and Lee came out strong, scoring five goals in the first 5:12 of the game. The Generals jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first quarter, led by three goals each from Sam Dardani and Whit Griffin. The Generals held a 22-3 edge in shots in the first period, keeping the pressure on the Marlin defense.

The Marlins scored their first goal early in the second quarter to break up the run as Eddie Desiderio scored off of an assist by Joe Couture.

Washington and Lee scored seven-straight goals following the Desiderio goal to put the Generals up 15-1.

Andrew Johnson added a goal to break the second General run, followed shortly after by a man-up goal by Cory Hilliard off a Couture assist.

Desiderio scored two goals for the Marlins while Couture tallied two assists. Philip Venanzi had a career game in goal, relieving Chris McTague to start the second quarter. He finished with 14 saves in 40:59 in goal.

Whit Griffin led the Generals with five goals and two assists, while Sam Dardani registered four goals and an assist to go with four assists from Hudson Hamill.

Washington and Lee (4-4/2-0) held an advantage in face-offs, 18-of-29. The Generals outshot the Marlins 56-19, and corralled 47 ground balls to 31 from Virginia Wesleyan.

Virginia Wesleyan (1-6/0-2) will travel to Bridgewater College (4-3/0-1) next Saturday for a 1 p.m. ODAC start.
