Marlins Blanked by Nationally Ranked Pacific

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Monday afternoon saw the Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team take the court for the first time since returning to Virginia from its Hilton Head training trip, this time against Pacific Univeristy out of Oregon. Pacific is currently ranked number 32 nationally in Division III, and the Boxers flexed their muscles en route to a 9-0 victory over the Marlins.

A slow start on the doubles courts saw the Fish fall into a 3-0 hole. Junior Jake Morgan saw action on court again for the first time since sustaining a wrist injury prior to the trip south; he paired with freshman Andreas Combos at the third doubles slot, ultimately falling 8-3 in their match.

"Against teams as good as Pacific we can't doom ourselves with starts like that," said head coach Marty Perry. "There were some bright spots today for sure, but we need to do a better job playing complete team matches."

In the singles portion of the competition, the Marlins found some of the fight for which Coach Perry was asking. At first singles, senior captain Brendan Kelleher found himself on the wrong end of a 6-2, 6-4 decision. At third singles, Andreas Combos captured the first set but ultimately fell 11-9 in a third-set super-tiebreak.

"We gave ourselves chances in singles for sure," said assistant coach Christian Nagy, "Now we have to turn our focus to getting bodies healthy and gearing up for this weekend."

This weekend will see a healthy dose of action for the Marlins. They are slated to take on Averett University on Friday, Randolph College on Saturday, and Lynchburg College on Sunday.
