No. 3 Marlins Roll in Saturday Victories

DOVER, Del. -- No. 3 Virginia Wesleyan College rolled by a combined 21-3 in a pair of softball games on Saturday against Wesley and Immaculata.

Game 1: 8-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory

The Marlins scored five runs in the final three innings to pull away against Wesley in the first game Saturday morning.

VWC got on the board quickly as Kiersten Richardson connected on a solo home run down the left-field line to start the contest. The Marlins utilized their power in the third to tack on another run as Liz Bailey connected for a solo shot.

After making the score 3-0 in the fourth, the Marlins pulled out the long ball once more in the fifth. After a Cassetty Howerin single to start the inning, Blake Henderson launched a ball deep over the left-field wall for a 5-0 edge.

An RBI double from Henderson and a Jessica Lindsay RBI single highlighted the late-inning scoring.

Lindsay Siok claimed the loss for Wesley (10-3), surrendering all three homers in 5.1 innings.

Howerin and Richardson and two hits each. Hanna Hull (9-2) allowed one hits while walking four in five innings of work, striking out 12 in the process.

Game 2: 13-3 Virginia Wesleyan Victory (5 innings)

The Marlins took advantage of three crooked innings to defeat Immaculata in the nightcap on Saturday.

Virginia Wesleyan scored four runs in the first, and another four in the second, to assume an insurmountable lead. Teresa Cardamone had a pair singles in the first two innings, driving in four RBI.

Immaculata scored one in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the third to make it 8-3 before a five-run fifth inning implemented the run rule.

Immaculata secured the first two outs quickly in the fifth before back-to-back singles from Richardson and Bailey set the table for Howerin. The Marlin first baseman connected for a homer to center, making the score 11-3. Henderson followed with another home run in the very next at bat.

Howerin went 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in game two, while Cardamone went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI. Courtney Wright (7-0) earned the win with three innings in the circle. Alana Peters pitched two no-hit innings of relief.

Abigial Carter had two hits for Immaculata (2-5).

No. 3 Virginia Wesleyan (19-1) hosts Mary Washington Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
