Marlins Drop 9-0 Defeat to Randolph-Macon

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Wednesday saw the Virginia Wesleyan women's tennis Team suffer a 9-0 defeat at the hands of visiting Randolph-Macon College. The visiting Yellow Jackets battled to a 3-0 lead in doubles and faced little resistance in the singles portion of the afternoon.

Randolph-Macon, currently regionally ranked in the Atlantic South region, and second in the ODAC only to national top-10 powerhouse Washington & Lee University, was able to use its impressive depth to quickly race out to a 1-0 lead thanks to an 8-1 victory at third doubles.

For the Marlins, the most impressive showing of the day came from the duo of freshman Aubree Johnson and sophomore captain Katie Staman.  The pair held a slight lead midway through the match, eventually dropping a close 8-4 decision at second doubles.

"Katie and Aubree played some of their best doubles of the year as a team. They were put together midway through the year, and have come so far as a duo. Very proud of the way they fought today," said assistant coach Christian Nagy.

In singles, Randolph-Macon was able to lay claim to all six matches, cementing the match score at 9-0 in their favor.

"It can be hard to see a ton of good with this kind of a scoreline, but I saw a ton of improvement throughout the matches. There was great effort and fight across the board for us. Congratulations to RMC today, they were simply too good today," remarked head coach Marty Perry.

The Marlins (1-12/0-7) will take the court this Saturday against Roanoke in another ODAC contest scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
